Mammoth Mountain in Mammoth Lakes, California has been supporting mountain biking since the sport’s infancy. This winter’s less-than-stellar snowfall and warm spring season means that riding is already happening on the mountain for 2013 season. With a few rain showers last week and perfect temperatures, the riding conditions couldn’t be much better right now.

While the entire mountain isn’t open yet, the gondola is set to start spinning up to McCoy station on June 21st. McCoy Station gives access to nearly all of our favorite DH trails on the mountain, so needless to say, we’ll be there ASAP. In the meantime, there are still a few downhill runs accessible from the Main Lodge as well as plenty of great pedal-earned trails available that are perfect for cross-country or mid-travel trailbikes. For this weekend, a number of trails are open, including Lower Twilight Zone, Downtown, Uptown, Big Ring, Paper Route, Juniper, Timber Ridge, Shotgun, Lower Pipeline, Lower Bullet, Lakes Trail and Pioneer Practice Loop.

Mammoth is also getting back to it’s roots this summer with a multi-day mountain bike festival they’re calling the Kamikaze Bike Games. Paying homage to the resort’s rich history of mountain biking while helping push the sport into the future, the festival will offer a wide variety of races and events from cross-country and downhill the increasingly popular enduro format. Mammoth put together this video together about the event. If anything, watch it for the classic riding footage from the mountain. It’ll either be a trip down memory lane or a history lesson for younger riders about the roots of our beloved sport.
