PHOTOS FROM THURSDAY AT THE SEA OTTER

Former pro motocross racer Daryl Ecklund took his first trip to the Sea Otter Classic this year to see what the event was like and shoot some photos for us.

After Daryl quit racing full-time in the pro motocross ranks, he became one of Motocross Action Magazine’s best test riders, a multi-time MXA cover star (both in front of and behind the camera), and one of MXA’s top editors. Here are some of the things that caught his eye at the Sea Otter.

The Sea Otter Bridge, where many of the races will start and end.

Dual Slalom practice and qualifying took place for the pros on Thursday. Ryan Gilchrist, #94, shown here, qualified second among the Elite Men.

The number plate tells us that this is Luke Meier-Smith, who qualified third among the Elite Men in the Dual Slalom.

Number 131 is Lear Miller, according to the time sheets.

Number 193 is Devin DeBruhl.

If that’s number 72, which is what it looks like to us, that’s Cody Kelley, running what might be the smallest, most-aerodynamic number plate we’ve seen. It must have worked. Cody Kelley was the top rider among the Elite Men in the Dual Slalom qualifiers.

Jill Kintner has been the top woman at Sea Otter many times, and it looks like she might do it again. She was the top qualifier in the Elite Women’s dual slalom.

We thought this might have been Travis Pastrana, based on the number plate, but the entry sheet says it’s Fabien Cousinie. He looks fast. He qualified 22nd among the Elite Men.

Brian Lopes may have crossed the 50-year-old barrier, but he’s still one of the all-time-best racers in the mountain bike world. He placed 40th among the Elite Men in the Dual Slalom qualifiers on Thursday. He’s won this event numerous times in the past.
