ABUS CLIFFHANGER MIPS HELMET REVIEW

An excellent half-shell helmet full of features that won't leave you hanging.

ABUS CLIFFHANGER MIPS HELMET REVIEW

Tech features:

Abus utilizes a skeleton-like internal reinforcement system inside of the Cliffhanger’s EPS core so that they can use less material and make the vents bigger. As the name suggests, the helmet comes with a MIPS angular impact protection layer. It comes with 14 vents and deep internal channeling for air circulation. The dial-adjustable retention system goes around the whole head, is height-adjustable and has a ponytail-friendly opening in the back.

Abus uses Fidlock’s magnetic closure on its straps, as well as a laterally adjustable, non-slip TriVider strap management system. The visor is three-way height adjustable with room for goggles. The CliffHanger is available in nine different colors and three sizes.

Field test results:

Right from the start, test riders were impressed with how easy it is to fit the Cliffhanger to the head. Its retention system is easy to adjust, and so is the strap management system. A super-nice touch is the long band used to capture excess strap material. It’s one of the best we’ve tested and eliminates excess flapping straps without having to cut it ultra short. Fidlock’s closure is one of our favorite features, thanks to the ease of use, too.

This helmet quickly became a staff favorite out on the trail, thanks to a comfy fit and excellent ventilation. Massive internal channels move an impressive amount of air. The fit seemed to make our oval-shaped head test riders the most happy, but the 360-degree retention system is accommodating to a wide range of shapes. Stability is superb without cranking down the retention system.

Eyewear clearance is generally good, but some earpieces made contact with the helmet shell since it’s close fitting on the sides. Test riders really like the shape, length and three-way adjustability of the visor. Overall, the Cliffhanger is one of the better half-shell helmets out there right now.
