JOINING THE MODERN AGE
Bruce Klein goes wide on the bars for stability and leverage.
Q: I have been considering upgrading my 680mm bars to 780mm but just keeping my 75mm stem. My bike has a 70-degree head angle, so will it feel too twitchy with the wide bars and longish stem? Also, will my reach be too long with my arms spread farther apart on the new bars? Thanks.
A: It is an excellent idea to increase your handlebar width. Considering the fact that your bike has a 70-degree head tube angle, it’s safe to assume that your bike is a cross-country bike from a few years back. It likely doesn’t have the long reach numbers seen on modern cross-country bikes. We usually recommend running a shorter stem with wider bars; however, in your case, you may want to try running the new 780 bars first and then purchasing or demoing a shorter stem later down the road to see if it further enhances the feel of the bike.
