BIKE CHECK: ERIC PORTER’S DIAMONDBACK YOWIE

Frame: Diamondback Yowie 5C, size large, 110mm rear travel, 130mm front travel.
“I worked with the Diamondback product team to develop this bike so we’d have something fast and efficient that you could still shred anything on. I had NICA racers in mind as well, since my kids are getting into that, so they’d have a bike they could race XC on but also be fun for big rides and everything else. I’ve set it up in many different configurations—from full-lightweight XC to the way it is now as more of a downcountry-type bike. It’s fun both ways!”

Fork: Fox 34 Factory Grip 2, 100 psi.
“I really like the Grip2 damper for more control as I hit bigger features and rougher terrain on this bike. I put a 34 StepCast 120mm when I wanna save some weight and make the bike more XC.”

Shock: Fox Float X, 175 psi.
“For full XC mode I switch to a Float SL.”

Tires: Kenda Karma 2 Pro, 29” x 2.4”, SCT.
“I run 2.4-inch Kenda Pinner Pro ATCs for more aggressive trails, and for full XC, I put on the Rush Pro SCT 2.4.”

Tire sealant and inserts: “I like Orange Seal Regular the best, and if I’m going out smashing, I run Tannus inserts.”

Rims: Enve M630.
“For this bike it’s the perfect balance of strength versus weight. They feel really good on the trail, too.”

Spokes: Sapim CX-Ray (Enve build)

Front hub: I9 Hydra

Rear hub: I9 Hydra

Brakes: “I usually run Magura MT7 with HCW lever blades, 180mm rotors, but when I’m not riding long descents and wanna save some weight, I’ll run MT8s since they are two-piston and still have great power.”

Handlebar: Deity Skywire 25mm rise, 35mm bore, cut to 780mm wide.

Bottom bracket: SRAM DUB

Grips: Deity Lockjaw

Cranks: SRAM X01 165mm
“I’ve recently gone to 165mm on all my bikes. This length is great for everything.”

Chainring: SRAM 34t

Pedals: Deity TMAC
“My favorite flat pedals for a long time. If I run clips, I put on XTR Trails.

Chain: SRAM XX1

Rear derailleur: SRAM X01 AXS

Shifter: SRAM X01 AXS

Cassette: SRAM X01 10-52

Saddle: SDG Bel Air 3 carbon rails

Seatpost: Magura Vyron V3

Headset: FSA 42

Stem: Deity Copperhead, 35mm length

Head angle: 67 degrees

Special touches: “Magura makes color rings for their brakes to match the color of your bike. It’s a nice touch.”

Extras: Lezyne Carbon Team Cage, CamelBak Podium Bottle.
“Often I’ll strap the Lezyne Sendit Caddy on with a tube, CO2, Pro Tubeless kit and multi-tool if I’m not on a big ride with my CamelBak pack.

Weight of complete bike: 28 pounds in downcountry setup. In full XC mode, it’s just under 26 pounds.

Estimated value of bike: $8,000
