Bike Shop Highlight: MJ’s Cyclery

MJ’s Cyclery

The MBA Wrecking Crew loves visiting bike shops and talking shop. It helps keep us grounded and it gives us an opportunity to hear what’s happening on the streets. There are thousands of shops around the globe and each one has a unique quality and story that we want to know about. So, send us some quality pics and your story, if you want to make it in our Bike Shop Highlight. Send your shop info to mbaction@hi-torque.com.

MJ’s Cyclery is a full sales and service bicycle shop

MJ’s Cyclery opened in 2014 with the goal of getting more people on bikes and out of their cars. Whether that means changing up your commute, heading to the store for some groceries, or going out with friends we are here to help. With so many great things to do and see in the area, being comfortable getting on a bike and heading out is a fantastic way to enhance your experience.

We are a stocking dealer for the Marin Bikes brand. Marin bicycles date back to 1986 when the mountain bike revolution was in full swing. As many brands do they added other segments to their lineup over the years. Today’s Marin offerings include mountain, gravel, road, cyclocross, commute, neighborhood, and kids’ bikes. Our focus at MJ’s Cyclery is commuting and neighborhood bikes but we are comfortable with all styles. Most of the staff at the shop are avid mountain bikers.

We are also a non-stocking dealer for Transition Bicycle Company, Banshee Bikes, Surly Bikes, Soma Bikes, and All City. There are several other brands available to us as well.

We offer a full range of service department. Whether it’s fixing a flat, getting your bike a tune-up, or doing an overhaul and building a new set of wheels we can do it all. Give us a call or drop by to see how we can help you.

“Great technicians, high quality work, excellent service, really great people in general. They have also charged me below their original estimate in a few previous repairs. I ride both enduro and DH bikes and sometimes don’t have the time to do more involved maintenance (shock/fork servicing, wheel hub rebuilds, brake bleeds, etc). MJ’s is the one and only shop I will go to in my neighborhood for bike service.”

About The Owner

Scott Armstrong

I first started working on bikes in 1986 when the then owner of The Chain Gang Bike Shop in Redding CA let me start helping out around the shop to work toward a new mountain bike. I don’t have that bike anymore but I do have the love of bikes I learned from the men and women at the shop. Until we opened MJ’s in 2013 I had never had a paying job in the industry. I have been lucky to have top notch mechanics as friends who have helped me hone my skills working on my own bikes and eventually doing small jobs for friends.

In 2012 I received a Professional Repair and Shop Operation certification from the United Bicycle Institute in Portland, OR.

I have been a core staff member of the SoCal League of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association since 2011. In 2015 I received the NICA Clif Bar Volunteer Service Award.

MJ’s Cyclery is a proud member of the Professional Bicycle Mechanics Association.

Service and Repair

Just like your body, your bike needs routine maintenance to have a long and happy life. Let’s give it some love.

General Repair

We can do anything from replacing a tube in a flat tire, replacing a worn our chain or brake pads, to a complete teardown of your bike followed by a full professional rebuild.

Bring your bike when it’s convenient for you. We will get it into a repair stand while you wait and take a look then discuss your options based on your needs and budget. Most repair jobs are completed within a day or two. If you aren’t sure what your bike may need bring it in.

We also offer a few appointment slots per day for a tune-up and larger repairs. This may work best for you if we have already discussed your bike’s needs and you need your bike in and out as quickly as possible.

New Bike Builds

The Internet has changed the bike industry. There are companies offering new bikes that they will ship directly to you or to a shop for assembly. “Assembly” is getting the bike into the shape of a bike. Assembly is what you see on most box store bikes. With very rare exceptions the skill of a bicycle technician and several bicycle-specific tools are highly recommended to get any new bike “built and tuned” to its full potential.  The fee for this service is $85+ (depending on the complexity of the build this is a somewhat variable price.)

Wheel Building

Your bike’s wheels are your bike’s feet. The rim, hub and spokes all work together to make an incredibly strong component. The wheels that came with the bike are just fine for most of us. Sometimes though it may be time for an upgrade or a different style of wheel to get the most out of your bike. If your goal is a lighter, faster, tougher, or prettier set of wheels we can design a set for you and build them in house.  Generally speaking, wheels are the best investment you can make on a bicycle.

Kona Process 167: 167mm travel All Mountain shredder. 26” wheels. Fox 36 fork and X2 shock, hand-built wheels with DT rims on Onyx RP hubs. Such a rad bike!

Suspension Service

Your bike’s suspension needs routine maintenance in order to keep working properly. Seals and oil break down and become contaminated with time. Pivot bearings and bushings wear out. It happens slowly so you may not even notice the decrease in performance. A fairly inexpensive service early on can save you from a very costly repair or part replacement down the road.

Bike Boxing and Rebuilding

If you are planning a trip or just finished a tour and need your bike boxed to ship or fly we can do this for you. In most cases, if you are shipping the bike it’s a one-stop visit. Once you get the bike to us, we box it up and email you the shipping dimensions and weight. You use that information to buy a shipping label from one of several 3rd party shippers (BikeFlights and ShipBikes are the most common) then email it back to us. The shipping company picks the bike up and delivers it to you.

For most bike boxing the fee is $75.

We can also rebuild a bike that is shipped to us or brought in. If you are planning on visiting or moving to the San Diego area reach out to us and get us the tracking information. Once we can confirm the arrival date of the bike we will put it in the work lineup for that or the next day and get it rebuilt and ready to ride. If we notice any repairs that need to be made we will get your OK for that unless it was previously discussed.

The fee to rebuild a boxed bike is generally $45-65 variable on the complexity of the build.

Travis’ Soma Double Cross Disc: One of our taller customers Travis needed a bike after his was swiped. We built this 66 cm steel road bike up for him with Shimano Claris 2X8 drivetrain. This bike is a tall baller on a budget. It is so smooth and fun to ride.
