Calfee Spy Shots
Although not a name frequently uttered in mountain bike circles, when it comes to the manufacture of carbon bicycle frames, Craig Calfee’s name can be found at the top of the list. The pioneer NorCal frame designer has been developing the breed for over three decades. In 1991 Calfee made history by building the first full carbon bikes used to compete in the Tour de France underneath three-time winner Greg LeMond.
While road bikes and tandems have been his mainstay business over the years, mountain bike historians will recall that in 1991 Craig also designed one of the wildest mountain bikes ever with his carbon Onyx with elevated chainstays.
Of course, when he’s not been busy refining the design of his carbon frames, the ever-inventive Calfee is also responsible for pioneering the use of bamboo tubes for bikes, which have literally revolutionized alternative transportation in Third World countries.
