Several waves of iconic freeride moments have come crashing onto the beach of mountain bike culture throughout the last few decades – each swell has its origins, but Kamloops B.C seems to continuously produce the largest. The whitewash of these monstrous waves comes in with blood, sweat, and broken bike parts, yet it spreads something completely different across the sand that remains: inspiration to the masses.
Why does Freeride strike the hearts of so many mountain bikers? It’s more than just a niche discipline of cycling, it’s been a movement – a form of rebellion.
For @konabikes Factory Rider @kystewart , this movement shaped her upbringing almost entirely. Born and raised in Kamloops B.C., it was just part of the norm to encourage a young shredder to hit jumps in the yard. As her local riding community dove deeper into jumps and creative lines, her progression as a rider evolved in variety, style, and impressive features – just like the famous local trails.

Throwback Thursday - Looking back to the 1990s
John Tomac is widely regarded as the most versatile bike racer in history. He left a promising career in BMX in the mid-1980s to take up mountain biking and then road biking. Tomac won so many major events in those two disciplines that Velo News voted him the world’s best all-around rider of 1988. Tomac raced both mountain and road bike events during the late 1980s up through 1991, when he decided to focus on mountain bikes again. Tomac thought that many of the top European road riders were using performance-enhancing drugs, making it too hard for a non-drug-using rider to beat them. He refused to take such drugs, so he went back to racing mountain bikes.
Not too long after that, Tomac decided to stop racing the UCI World Cup cross-country series when he began to suspect that many of the newer European cross-country mountain bike racers were also using performance-enhancing drugs.
One of the people who won a UCI XC World Championship in the 1990s was Christophe Dupouey, who was later stripped of his world title for having been found to have used performance-enhancing drugs to win the title. Dupouey ended up committing suicide in 2009 after his title was taken away from him for having used drugs, and it was also revealed that he was involved in drug trafficking. Here’s what one cycling news site said about Dupouey’s case: “In 2006 he was given a suspended three-month prison sentence for participating in a trafficking network for ‘pot belge,’ a mix of cocaine, caffeine, pain killers, sometimes amphetamines and heroin.” That’s from the story, “Former World Champion Dupouey commits suicide,” published in Cycling News, February 5, 2009,
Europeans weren’t the only bike racers who began using performance-enhancing drugs in the 1990s. America’s Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France seven times—1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005— before he was exposed for having used performance-enhancing drugs to achieve those wins.
In 1991, Tomac won the UCI World Cup XC title as well as the UCI XC World Championship for that year. Tomac also took second in the downhill at the UCI World Championship in 1991 and ’97.
