I glanced down at his GPS to see that he had already climbed 6800 feet in under four hours.
While I was staring at numbers that would be tough for most riders, the 59-year-old racer politely asked, “Do you have any extra water? I’m out.” I thought he was kidding, being that we were so far into the mountains, but he wasn’t. He told us that the place where he was planning to get water was closed.
We topped off his water bottle, said goodbye, and Tinker dropped back down the trail. My brother and I just looked at each other with the same grin and thought: “How rad and random was that?!”
Mountain Bike Action is a monthly magazine devoted to all things mountain biking (yes, that’s 12 times a year because we never take a month off of mountain biking). It has been around since 1986 and we’re still having fun.
