GIANT AND JEROME CHIOTTI PART WAYS

According to a Giant Bicycles statement published on its website, Jerome Chiotti and the company have mutually agreed to terminate their existing contract. In April the French magazine ?Velo Vert? published an interview with Jerome where he stated he used the banned substance EPO to win his 1996 cross-country World Championship. He also claimed to have struck a deal with fellow countryman Miguel Martinez to allow himself to win the 1999 French National Championships.
Due to these admissions, Jerome will undergo disciplinary proceedings by the French Cycling Federation. He faces possible suspension and revoking of his World Championship title.
Jerome says he is not in the right physical or emotional state to compete and needs time away from the media and the public to prepare to defend himself against the disciplinary committee. Giant closed by saying ?it commends Jerome for speaking honestly and bravely about the issue of doping within cycling.
Jerome has maintained that he came out with the revelation in an effort to expose the doping problem in professional mountain bike racing. He claims to have been clean since the end of ?96. He hoped more riders would follow suit and admit to the problem and then come clean but since he faces a career ending suspension he feels that riders will continue to dope behind closed doors.
