HANGING OUT WITH MISSY

Richard J. Cunningham

Recently, Missy Giove dropped into MBA’s North tower. The main reason for her visit was to photograph the new team in their ?01 regalia. While John Ker was setting up for the shoot, the Missile, my new dog Capulin and I stole away for a walk. Missy, a polished professional now, has her game face on–but she’s still sensitive enough to win the favor of my skeptical mutt. It’s no easy task. Capulins idea of a pleasant conversation is: I growl. You leave immediately.
Turns out that Missy is working with a female sports television network that will be airing downhill, the dual and XC racing next year. Although the network will feature the basic stick and ball sports, they will mainly focus on left-of-center games like mountain bike, ski, snowboard and motorcycle racing. Missy is stoked–she competes on motorcycles, skis and–well–you know the other one.
The girl looks fit. Missy’s doo of the month was short, spiked, black hair with magenta highlights. Although back problems have been nagging her since early last season, she absolutely radiates confidence. ?It hurts,? she mentioned,? but I just deal with it.?
The conversation switched from NORBA TV coverage to Chinese films, and pets in popular culture–then I made the mistake of mentioning her new Foes downhill machine. Missy went off on a technical diatribe, explaining every nuance of its handling and suspension without taking a breath for five minutes. Yeah, she was stoked.
?OK…Ill ride your bike? I had to. Missy never takes no for an answer. It was still chalky gray from the heat-treating process (Missy couldn?t wait for the painter). The suspension was super soft. There’s nine inches of travel in the rear and seven and a half up front. She is sponsored by RockShox, and the four-inch stroke shock is one of the first Black Box shocks to come out of that company’s secret development group.
Missy is only five-foot, five-inches tall and fitting her highness over a long-travel downhill sled is no easy task. Brent Foes pulled it off this year. The bike handles like a longer chassis, but it actually measures on the short side. The magic is hidden in the Foes geometry and swingarm arrangement.
Missy’s photo shoot was over. Baja Fresh burritos were the only thing on her mind now. ?Come up to Colorado,? Missy shouted as she boarded her huge, black pickup, ?Stay at my place. I’ll take you on some sweet rides.? The truck roared to life and the Missile was down the road and gone in a few seconds.
With a look that said, the funs over, Capulin trotted over to my Volvo and disappeared into the front seat.
Whoa, I thought, Did Missy Giove just visit, or was I daydreaming?
The girl never stops.
