Hans Rey’s Bucket-List Trails

Livigno, Italy

Editors Note:

There’s nobody in the mountain bike world we can think of who has ridden more places than the legendary Hans “No Way” Rey. He’s visited countless countries across the globe with his bike and has the passport stamps to prove it. When he says there’s a trail system that should be on everyone’s bucket list, we listen. He recently mentioned the bike park in Livigno, Italy, as one of his favorite spots, and we wanted to hear why. These are Hans’ favorite reasons for riding Livigno’s Carosello 3000 bike park.

10 REASONS WHY I RIDE AT CAROSELLO 3000 EVERY YEAR

1) When I was an 8-year-old boy, I first visited Livigno on a family hiking vacation. Ever since, the place has had a special spot in my heart. In 2007 I got engaged to my wife, Carmen, on top of the Carosello 3000 at 10,000 feet elevation, near remote mountain huts that overlook the entire Livigno valley. Feel the Alps, feel the flow.

2) Carosello 3000 is a ski resort in the Italian mountain village of Livigno in the heart of the Alps, not far from the Swiss and Austrian borders. They have built—and are still building—one of the best trail centers in the world. This is not a typical bike park. It offers a variety of flow and natural trails for all skill levels. In the past two years they have added over 20 miles of Flow and Flow Country trails. All trails can be accessed by a lift (three lifts operate during the summer months), and many of them can be combined as great tour options.

3) Livigno features one of the longest Flow trail networks in Europe. It was built by the Carosello 3000 Trail Crew and inspired by yours truly, as well as European trail-building guru Diddie Schneider.

4) Livigno is an active little town with many restaurants and hotels. They even have so-called “bike hotels” that cater specifically to cyclists. They have special and secure bike rooms, workshop areas with tools and maintenance supplies, a bike wash, complimentary overnight laundry service for your bike gear, cyclist-specific menus, in-house guides, rental bikes, maps, tour info and suggestions, and a cyclist-friendly environment. Often the owners and staff are passionate cyclists themselves. Livigno also offers many other activities, including a great lake.

5) Livigno is a paradise for any kind of cyclist, no matter if it’s trans-alp/back- country tours, enduro, free-ride, bike park, pump track, fat bike, e-bike or climbing some of the most famous alpine passes on a road bike.

6) Livigno has been granted tax-free (duty-free) status by the European Union, therefore everything is cheaper, and you save the 22-percent VAT sales tax, even on bikes and parts.

7) Carosello 3000 has some of the most beautiful and breathtaking panoramic views across the Alps. On a nice day you can see the surrounding mountain peaks from Italy, Switzerland and Austria.

8) The purpose-built trails are done nice and predictable, which means no surprises and guaranteed fun, no matter what kind of bike or skill level you have. Good riders enjoy the roller-coaster-style trails as well, just faster and more creatively. But at the end of the trail, the smile on everybody’s face is the same size.

9) The Italian food and lifestyle, aka la dolce vita, are famous around the world, and in Livigno there are countless restaurants, many of them offering local mountain dishes, great pasta, pizza or gelato. There are many remote, rustic, alpine restaurants tucked away in the mountains and valley, welcoming bikers for lunch and refreshments, often made with their own fresh products.

10) Livigno has hosted many top-level events over the years—from the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships in 2008 to numerous trans-alp stages, Giro d’Italia stages, the Nationalpark Marathon or the Nine Knights Freeride comp, just to mention a few.
