Our junior rider of honor this week is 15 year-old Hugo Chavez of Tecate, Mexico. Hugo rides for Team Turbo out of San Luis, Potosi, Mexico. Team Turbo is the largest team in Mexico and the Junior World Cup race in Mazatlan, Mexico was Hugo’s first for the team?and he won it. Hugo and Turbo were especially proud of this performance because it came at the expense of the American Devo team, one of the best teams of junior riders in the world. Hugo is currently leading the junior national championship series in Mexico and has his sights set on the Worlds in Spain in mid-summer. Hugo, who attends Fernando Montes de Oca Junior High school in Tecate, trains 5 days a week for 2 to 3 hours. He said he learned to speak English mostly from watching TV and likes to play Nintendo and a little basketball when he’s off the bike. Future goals of Hugo’s are to win the Mexican National Championships and then win the World Cup overall championship. For the time being, Hugo wants to help build the Turbo team into a major world force (it already has the best Mexican rider, Madrigal Ziranda who finished a respectable 41st overall in the elite men’s race at Mazatlan). Hugo feels that being a part of a team like Turbo is the best way to get known in the racing world.
