JUNIOR RIDER OF THE WEEK: KYLE STRAIT

How do you spell chaotic? Junior Development Team Devo spells it “Kayodic” Kyle Strait. Kyle was picked up for Devo’s “B” Team in March 1999, during the Sea Otter Classic, when he was just 11 years old. Although finishing 41st out of all the 78 juniors, Kyle went on to win almost everything else. He had downhill wins for the NORBA Nationals at Big Bear, Mammoth, and Deer Valley, as well as a Dual Slalom win at Deer Valley and a 4th place in Big Bear. With that impressive season, Ventana asked Kyle to ride their new frame for dual slalom in the 2000 season, which he is very happy to do!
Kyle is 13 and in the 7th grade at Clement Middle School in Redlands, California. Kyle made the honor roll this year and is maintaining a 3.55 GPA. When not doing homework, Kyle likes to ride or dirt jump. He also has 2 trampolines in his backyard and a “trampoline” bike. You can find him there most nights practicing his tailwhips and heelclickers.Kyle came into this world with a racing spirit. He rode his first 2-wheeler at age 3. His only racing experience was the Shimano Kids Race and the Redlands Bicycle Classic before he began racing BMX in ’97. By ’98, he wanted to do something with a little more excitement, and that’s when he found downhill. Kyle’s ultimate goal is to go to the Olympics. He is hopeful that downhill will become an Olympic event by the time he is old enough to go. For now, his sights are on the World Championships. So far this 2000 pre-season, Kyle finished a very respectable 11th in the 12-18 sport category in the Sea Otter downhill and 5th in the dual slalom, 2nd at Sagebrush, 1st in the Bud Light Series at Castaic Lake, as well as several top fives in some local races.

His sponsors are (in alphabetical order): AXO, DEVO, Goat Eyewear, Lizard Skins, MRP, ODI, Premier Pizza, Redlands Chiropractic, Seismic, Shimano, Signs Now, Titec, Troy Lee Designs, Ventana, and White Brothers.(This article first appeared at mbaction.com on May 2, 2002.)
