MBACTION.COM Review: iSSi II Pedals

Mountain biking can be tough on your equipment and wallet. The iSSi pedals offer riders decent durability at a good price, not to mention all the color options that are available.

The iSSi II comes in at a competitive 316 grams (per pair) and feature an aluminum pedal body and chromoly spindle. The pedals have a sealed cartridge bearing and bushing, both of which are serviceable. Not only are there eight different color options but three different spindle lengths (standard 52.2mm, +6mm, and +12mm) to customize the fit and needs of each rider. Like a few other companies, iSSi made these SPD compatible and does include a pair of cleats with each pair of pedals. All of this is packed into a $75 retail.

Out of the box we loved the Hi-Vis Yellow color, this is something that is unique to iSSi and definitely makes customizing your bike more fun. The bearings felt pretty smooth and the weight was impressive, especially given the price tag. We mounted them up and set the spring tension of the engagements and hit the trail. These pedals only allow 4 degrees of float, which was hardly noticeable, but might be noticed by others who have specific needs.

Clipping in was pretty straight forward and easy as the spindle bearings worked predictably and made it easy to find the engagement. There were issues twisting out of the pedal however. The engagement plates felt thinner than other SPD style pedals and had a tendency to flex when we would try to unclip. This made for some interesting situations on the trail when trying to unclip in tight spots. We did notice that small parts of the paint on the pedal body came off after a few minor bumps on the trail.  After some hard riding the bearings didn’t develop any play and felt as smooth as when we first got them.

Overall these pedals are a good weight, good price, and the multiple color options make them appealing. The durability of the paint is questionable but the overall performance of the pedal makes it a competitor at this price point.
