Meet The Athertons

people who are signed up for our newsletter. We wanted to reward the people who’ve been supporting us from the start. We’re super stoked with the bikes. The ride is better than anything we’ve ridden before, and the fit is better than any of our rivals; but, we need a bit of time to scale up to full production, so this was a way to get some bikes out there without the drama of a full-scale launch. There are a couple of build slots still left, and we have already shipped a couple of bikes to the USA, so get in it!

How much will they cost in Great Britain and the U.S.?

Prices are fixed on GBP, and dollar prices are dependent on the latest exchange rates, but as a guide only that equates to the dollar prices given here:

Using yearly average exchange rate to April 2020 (1.2718)

Frame only £3700 ( £3083 excluding tax) ($3921 exc tax)

Build Spec 1 £8000 (£6667 excluding tax) ($8479 exc tax)

Build Spec 2 £6000 (£5000 excluding tax) ($6359 exc tax)

Ed overfills the double-lap shear joints in the titanium lugs with adhesive before adding the carbon tubes of the frame structure. These double-lap joints add to the overall strength of the frame.

Build Spec 1 £7000 (£5833 excluding tax) ($7418 exc tax)

How much do your frames weigh?

The 150mm with a Fox float X2 shock is 3.4 kilograms (7.5 pounds).

How much travel do your bikes have?

The DH bike has 200mm.

The Enduro has 150mm.

Here we have Ben Lovell, Continental Atherton Race Team mechanic, building up Rachel’s bike at the Atherton headquarters.

What is the main thing that you hope riders will notice when they ride your bikes?

We want everyone to be as excited to ride these bikes as we are. They genuinely are the best bikes we’ve ever ridden. We made sure that we didn’t go into production until we could say that, hand on heart. People who try them say that they feel instantly familiar, that they make you ride faster than you have any right to ride on the first run. That’s what we set out to do.

Along with the downhill option, Atherton Bikes is also producing an Enduro-ready 29er with 150mm travel.

A QUICK CHAT WITH GEE ATHERTON

Tell us how you feel about your latest bikes?

“The trail bike is what we have had the best feedback from. People are loving it. It’s sick to see how excited they are. They get the bike, build it up, and they are riding it. It’s never been like, ‘Yeah it feels nice.’ They are properly excited about it! That’s the same for the team, people who’ve bought it, and guys that got to test it. Everyone has been pretty blown away with it really.”

Are there any of the #firstfity in the U.S.?

“The first couple of bikes actually went to the U.S. It’s really quite cool to see that. [Having them in the] UK is really cool, but it’s great to think that people all over the world are interested in our bikes.”

What are you doing considering that racing is put on hold at the moment?

“I think we are lucky where we live. We’ve got this bike park that we started, and my brother has…
