WOMEN SHRED, TOO!
Q: So, I’d just like to point out that your mag doesn’t show many female riders. It would be totally awesome to see more girl power in Mountain Bike Action.
A: Well, Katy, you’re in luck! We featured a story in this issue called “Girls Who Shred.” We hope you like this feature and the many more to come. Keep on shredding!
DO I REALLY NEED A NEW BIKE?
Q: I recently got back into mountain biking after an eight-year hiatus. Not to brag, but I was quite the hot shot back in my day. I won almost every local race I entered and trained daily! I even thought about going pro, but got burnt out and took up swimming for a while. Now I’m back and ready to race again.
About a year ago I dusted off my old race bike and reunited with some training friends whom I used to smash—not only on the climbs but the downhills, too. Guess my bike isn’t what it used to be. I haven’t won a race all year and have been training twice as hard. All my friends are riding bikes with bigger wheels, carbon frames and suspension lockouts. They were waiting at the top of a climb last week, yelling at me to catch up. I’m still in amazing shape, so it has to be my outdated bike.
Do you have suggestions on how I can make my old bike competitive for 50-plus-mile XC races, or should I retire it for a new one?
A: It sounds like you’re quite the established racer. Although you sound tough as nails, we think a new ride would help make you more comfortable and competitive in your racing career. A lot has changed over the past eight years. Ask your riding buddies what they like and dislike about their current bikes. This is a great question to ask at your local races as well. If you want a more competitive bike, first you must learn what your competition is riding, then make a decision from there. Good luck with your racing, and hope to see you on the podium again soon.
