The Ones That Got Away
Every year we shoot tens of thousands of photos, of which maybe 1 in 100 end up in the magazine. At the end of the year, we sometimes find that some of the best ones weren’t even used. We decided to take a look back at the photos from the past year and share some of our favorite.
End of the day: Eliot Jackson prepares to drop into a wild and woolly downhill trail in Southern California.
Always on the edge: Kevin Aiello, after being sidelined by a series of injuries the past few months, returned to his risk-taking ways with this rowdy line down treacherous terrain with the Pacific Ocean in the background. Photo by Dan Severson
Exotic locales: Spencer Rathkamp, riding the trails of the Chilcotin Mountains in British Columbia on the 2017 Giant Trance. Photo by Sterling Lorence
Racking up the wins: Aaron Gwin picked up his seventh national downhill title this summer at Mammoth Mountain. (Aaron began his almost-perfect run in 2009; he crashed and took second to Logan Binggeli in 2011.)
Racing in the rain: Emily Batty leans into a steep turn at Bonelli Park, California, with Katerina Nash behind her. The two would take fourth and fifth, respectively, in the Olympics a few months later.
Sweet trail: Patrick Reynoso enjoys the greenery of spring in the hills near Pasadena.
The white stuff: Brandon Castelli sampled the trails in the nearby mountains following a winter snowstorm at the higher elevations of Southern California. Photo by Karel Kramer
THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS TO GET MOUNTAIN BIKE ACTION
