Burgtec Penthouse Flat MK5 Pedals

Burgtec was founded back in 2004 and fueled by a passion for downhill racing. The UK-based component brand doesn’t need to boast or brag about its success; instead, it leaves its street credibility in the hands of its elite racers. With a roster that includes Greg Minnaar, Luca Shaw, Steve Peat and Josh Bryceland, it’s normal to see Burgtec components on the top step of the podium.

This month our test riders decided to put one of Burgtec’s products to the test. The Penthouse Flat MK5 pedals are based on a 16-year legacy of the first edition of this pedal. Now in its fifth iteration, Burgtec’s flat pedals promise to be bigger, grippier, lighter and tougher than before. Let’s dive into the tech specs and hit the trails with the MK5 pedals.

Tech features: The Penthouse MK5 pedals are durable inside and out and come in a variety of colors to match almost every bike on the market. The pedals are constructed from 7075 alloy with steel axles for a total weight of 379 grams per pair. Burgtec claims the new pedals are 65 grams lighter per pedal than the old MK4 design. Although Burgtec shaved weight, the platform size increased by 7 percent, and dish increased by 1mm, adding additional grip.

The MK5’s platform measures 100mm x 102mm, sizing these pedals right in the sweet spot for flats. There are eight pins per side, and the pedals use bushings, sealed bearings and rubber seals to increase longevity. Last but not least, the MK5 pedals are available in nine anodized colors and sell for $149.99.

Field test results: As soon as we took the MK5 pedals out of the box, we were immediately impressed with their lightweight feel. The light weight is especially impressive considering the steel axles and aluminum body construction. The pedals’ weight is on par with some composite pedal options on the market. Once we spun these low-profile pedals on our test bike and headed out for a ride, we quickly fell in love with the size and shape. The pedal design offered a planted feel that held our feet in place well. That said, these pedals still allowed us to make small adjustments to our foot placement while riding.

Overall, Burgtec’s fifth-edition MK5 pedals proved to be a winning solution for flat-pedal riders. These pedals not only provide a happy-medium size, they also offer an array of colors along with durable construction. Our one and only complaint is that Burgtec has few U.S. suppliers at the time of this writing. If you’re able to track down a pair of Burgtec’s newest pedals, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by them.
