RACE NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 30TH

By Mike Cushionbury

BACK AT THE RANCH
The last two weeks have been hectic to say the least. Right after the Big Bear NORBA National, I pulled the big ?ol D-Wide back to the home pad, gave the cats a quick bath and was off again. I spent the next week in Vancouver, BC, hanging out at the Norco offices and more or less watching the Norco downhill and freeride team ride some of the most wicked trials I have ever seen. The real kicker is that these guys (and girls) are super cool and don?t consider themselves some kind of two-wheeled over-lords. They?re just regular riders out for a ride. Just don?t call what they do North Shore Riding, it’s just freeriding.
A Vancouver tradition is urban freeriding. That’s where we all gather up our DH bikes and blast through the city jumping stairs, benches and anything else that constitutes a drop-in or jump ramp. We hit the city about 11 pm and rode ?till about 2am and stopped at Burger King right in the middle. It was great! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a thrill?be sure to use a long-travel bike for unlimited air-time. If you use a hardtail with flat bars you aren?t urban freeriding, you?re just road riding.
A clothing favorite in Vancouver is Roach. I stopped by their offices and met owner Ingrid Doerr. She started out as a bike messenger and later became a pro mountain bike racer. Now-a-days she designs some of the most useful and fashionable digs on the Shore (she started Roach in 1990). The fact that she knows what she is doing is evident in the designs she comes up with.
If you want a sweet video, check out Roach’s video debut Menace 2 Society. It features BMX, motocross, mountain bike racing, freeriding and urban assault. It’s well worth the $15. Call Roach at (604) 709-3377
Look for a complete story on the Shore and it’s riders in the September issue.

Now that I?m back, and checkin? email and phone messages I see that my World Cup correspondent has went AWOL. If you see a guy in a Volvo-Cannondale hat, probably giving instructions to his riders, have him call me.
