Throwback Thursday: Riding Tips from 1986

Jeff Spencer wrote this article for the first issue of Mountain Bike Action, dated July 1986. Spencer had been selected to be a member of the U.S. Olympic cycling team of 1972. After that, he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education at USC and then was hired by American Honda from 1980 to 1984 to work as a trainer of the top motocross riders in America. His trainees included many of the biggest stars of that sport, including Bob Hannah, Broc Glover, Danny “Magoo” Chandler, David Bailey and Johnny O’Mara. An enthusiastic mountain biker himself, Jeff shared these tips with the readers of our first issue, many of whom were still new to the sport of mountain biking (also known then as all-terrain-biking), but his tips are still worth reading today. Note that helmets were generally considered an issue of personal choice in those days, although Jeff Spencer encouraged their use.
