Team of the Month:
Monrovia High School
Monrovia High School Mountain Bike Team
One of the most inspirational stories to come out of the world of USA mountain biking has been the explosive growth of high school racing. This month we reached out to head coach Sean Hickey to learn about the Monrovia High School Mountain Bike Team based in Southern California.
What is the name of your team, and where did the name come from?
Monrovia Wildcats, based on the mountain lions, bobcats, and even ring-tailed cats that roam our mountains.
Which league do you race with?
Southern California High School Cycling League.
When was the team started?
The team has its foundations in the San Gabriel Valley Composite Team. Coach Sean Hickey broke off in the 2013–2014 season. MHSMTB has been going strong for five seasons now.
How many riders do you have on the team?
Going into the 2019 season, we will have the highest number of racers at 12, which includes middle and high school students.
What is your favorite course?
Vail Lake is a racer favorite; however, as one of the coaches, Terry Crouse enjoys the buildup to the first season race, Beach to Boulders at Lake Perris. It’s our new and returning racers who have been anticipating this day for two months or more, and it’s finally here! It’s fun to see our new riders as they start to experience what mountain bike racing is all about.
Any team or school fun facts?
Despite being a small team in a new program, often with brand-new riders, our first-year varsity rider earned two firsts. Our other riders all moved up dramatically, including our lady cats, who broke top-5 and top-10 spots. Like our namesake, we may not be all that polished, but we love fun in the wild.
