One of the most inspirational stories to come out of the world of USA mountain biking has been the explosive growth of high school racing. This month we reached out to head coach Bob Agan to learn about the Salinas High School Mountain Bike Team in Salinas, California.
Alison O’Dell, East Garrison.
Where did the name come from?
Our school was founded in 1882, and our mascot reflects the very famous California Rodeo Salinas, which is over 100 years old.
Girls Group, “The Rock,” Ft. Ord.
Which league do you race with?
We are in the South Conference of the NorCal League.
Shane Agan, Six Sigma Ranch.
When was the team started?
Cowboy Racing is one of the older teams, having been founded in 2006.
Coach Jim Warwick with KSBW Sports Anchor Drea Blackwell, Toro Park.
How many boys and girls are on the team?
We have a team of 12 girls and 20 boys. We get athletes from all sports—water polo, cross-country, basketball, football, cheerleading and others. We have two sophomores on our JV team who, at age 15, were the youngest riders to complete all five passes of the famed “Death Ride” last summer.
Andrew Carr, East Garrison.
What is your favorite course?
We have two courses right in our backyard—East Garrison and Laguna Seca.
The team loves to go to Granite Bay, though.
Audrey Baenzinger, Six Sigma Ranch.
Any team or school fun facts?
We are deeply connected to the community. We participate in our school homecoming parade, the Salinas Holiday of Lights Parade, do trail work with our local IMBA chapter, and have a 24-hour ride fo charity that is new this year.
We also have the Sea Otter Classic right in our backyard, and most members of our team race and/or volunteer every year.
Our founding coach, Jim Warwick, was coach of the year for NorCal. In a fun surprise, he was also awarded the Taylor Farms Golden Whistle coaching award from our local NBC affiliate.
