Garage Files – Tubeless Setup With Genuine Innovations
“No time to spare” is the mantra at Genuine Innovations, because their products are designed to prevent the most basic problem on bikes—flat tires. Since bikes—and motorcycles for that matter—simply don’t have room for spares, a tubeless conversion with sealant is quickly becoming the go-to solution. With so many different kits to choose from, it can be a challenge to decide which one is best for you.
The Genuine Innovations Pro Sealant Conversion kit uses a latex-based sealant with Gorilla tape to seal the rim and CO2 cartridges with chucks to make inflation easier. As far as we know, Genuine Innovations is the only sealant that’s currently compatible with CO2 inflation. The sealant also includes chemicals that work to prevent rust and corrosion damage to tires and rims over prolonged use. The kit includes enough sealant for roughly four wheels and retails for $60. We decided to see if this “easy” solution to the problem of flats really works.
1-Take off current tube and tire and remove the rim tape.
2-Clean the rim. Remove old adhesive and sealant.
3-Peel the Gorilla tape back.
4-Begin taping by the valve hole. Make sure the tape sits just under the bead.
5-Keep the tape pulled taut as you go all the way around.
6-Overlap the tape 4–6 inches, and then tear the tape off. Check to make sure the tape is smooth and not too high on the bead.
7-Take a sharp point and poke a small puncture in the rim tape to allow for the valve.
8-Remove the valve O-ring and cap.
9-Place the valve in the hole that you made in step eight.
10-Pull the valve through and tighten down the O-ring until it’s tight against the rim.
11-Inspect the tire for wear. Make sure the bead is good and that it is tubeless-ready.
12-Lock one side of the tire on the rim first.
13-Fold one of the beads over the valve.
14-Measure the sealant into the cup. It will be 2–3 ounces depending on the tire size.
15-Poor the sealant into the tire carcass.
16-Fold the other half of the bead over.
17-Rotate the pool of sealant towards the sealed part of the tire.
18-Check the tire. Make sure that the bead is on the rim.
19-Spin the wheel to spread the sealant along the inside of the tire.
20-Thread the 20-gram CO2 cartridge onto the air chuck and put it on the valve.
21-Back the cartridge out to allow airflow into the tire.
22-Empty the canister into the tire, seating the tire onto the rim bead.
23-Spin the wheel to spread the CO2 and seal any tiny holes or cracks.
24-If necessary, put a little extra air into the tire to lock the bead on the rim.
25-Wipe any excess sealant from the tire and sidewall and go ride.
