Trek’s honches paid a visit to MBA last week and gave us a preview of some 2002 tidbits. The dual-suspension Fuel gets some new technology in the form of moldable carbon fiber, a liquid substance developed by Hexcell Corporation, an international leader in the reinforced composite biz. The secret stuff marks the first time that a new composite concept has been first tested in the bike biz BEFORE being brought to the air and space industry. Trek will mold the fuel’s rocker links from the stuff that tests almost double the strength of the previous forged aluminum rockers and weigh almost 60 grams lesS per side.
Another composite addition to the Fuel, is a carbon fiber chainstay. Previously, only the Fuel’s seatstay had a bonded carbon fiber tube segment. The Fuel’s rear wheel travel stays at three inches and its geometry also remains the same. One Item that few have seen is the Trek’s 2002 RockShox SID Race fork. Last year’s SID Race was very lightweight, but this came at the expense of no features: the important ones like a lockout, rebound controls and useable suspension travel. The new “Race” has the Climb-it control valve lockout feature, three inches of travel and a rebound clicker. As usual, the RockShox flagship is the best looking fork on the pro circuit. The 2002 model has gold-colored titanium nitride plated legs that are just too cool.
Two models will be produced with the liquid carbon link technology and another pair of trailbike-type Fuels will use the forged aluminum links. Trek promised to send us one of the first production samples of the 2002 Fuel for a complete test. See you then.
