Back in 1980, Victor Vincente Of America, the infamous guru of mountain biking began his underground group rides through the Santa Monica Mountains. The group was called the Topanga Riders, which put out a monthly bulletin announcing the local rides. Brian Skinner, Steve Boehmke (Rock Shox) Kye Sharp, Mark Grayson, Jimmy Deaton, Steve Potts, Dan Hannebrink and others showed up for the events.
The Topanga Riders also put on one of the first downhill events called Puerco, in Malibu. And you thought it all began on Mt. Tam! To bring some soul back to the technology and race-filled mountain bike scene Victor Vincente Of America (one word!) called in the troops last week for the 20th Annual Reseda To The Sea Ride. Thirty riders from all over the planet showed up to ride the 30-mile loop. As the group gathered up at the Hub, the midpoint of the loop, hikers and other riders were quite amused at Victor’s low-tech mountain bike gear and accessories. VVA is close to sixty years of age and can still hammer the hills with the best of them. The 20th Annual was a huge success. This trail is where it all began in Southern California back in 1979 when riders where exploring the hills on road bikes. Bikes have changed but the spirit of mountain biking remains the same. Thanks VVA for a great event.
