THE NEW SOUTHWEST DOWNHILL SERIES HAS BEGUN

Former U.S. downhill national champion Steven Walton has launched a new downhill series for the Southwestern United States

Last weekend, Steven Walton (America’s top Pro downhill racer a few years ago) launched a new downhill series in the U.S. The first race was held at Snow Valley in Running Springs, California. Steven sent us his report about the event, along with a selection of photos from Ben Wilson.

Here’s what Steven told us:

“We kicked off the first ever Southwest Downhill Series event over the weekend at the Snow Valley Bike Park in Running Springs, CA! Historically, this region is known for producing some of the best talent in the world, all while not having a USAC-sanctioned downhill series for racers to begin their pathway on. My goal with this series is to create more opportunities for West Coast athletes to cut their teeth on racing and find their love for the sport! I’m grateful to have the legendary Team Big Bear crew handling our timing, and Clay Harper from the Monster Energy Pro Downhill Series/US Open on board to assist with on-site operations.

“Our inaugural 2024 season has a total of four events on the schedule, with three still remaining. We are headed up to China Peak Mountain Resort July 12th – 14th for Round 2 before heading back down to Running Springs for Round 3 at Snow Valley, August 9th – 11th. Our grand finale is set for the Vailocity Bike Park in Temecula, California, from September 13th–15th, where we will debut a brand new DH track and never before seen shuttles at the Vailocity Bike Park.

“2025 and beyond will see the series expand into other states, creating a true “Southwest downhill” experience! This entire series is currently self-funded, but we’re pleased to have HT Components and SR Suntour on board to supply us with great prizes to give away at each event, as well as Action Sports Canopies being a huge help with all event branding!

“For the most up-to-date information, riders can follow along on our Instagram page, @SouthwestDownhill. Our event registration process is organized through the BikeReg platform, ensuring a smooth and trusted transaction. For anyone interested in supporting the series and becoming a partner or just wishing to have a presence at the events, please email [email protected] to start the discussion. We’re passionate about surrounding ourselves with brands and people interested in supporting the future of American DH racing.”
