THROWBACK THURSDAY: HANS REY, DOWNHILL RACING IN THE SNOW AT BIG BEAR

Mountain bike racing in Southern California in the early '90s

As we recall, this was the first weekend in June one year in the early 1990s. It was raining in Los Angeles when we drove to Big Bear to cover the race that weekend. When we got there, it was snowing on the higher parts of the mountain, but that didn’t stop the promoters  or the riders, and it didn’t stop us from covering the event.

We found this photo in our files and sent it to Hans Rey to see if he could tell us who the rider was. It looked like it might be him, and Hans used to race downhill for GT in those days.

Hans wrote back: “Yes, that is me. That was the crazy Downhill Mania Weekend. Two weeks before we raced in Big Bear and it was 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Two weeks later we had this unexpected blizzard. Nobody was prepared (clothes wise).”
