Throwback Thursday: Saddle Height, 1989

Mountain Bike Action editor Zapata Espinoza gave a demonstration 30 years ago of proper leg extension for mountain biking. The saddle position in our top photo here is a little too low, which can be seen by how much the left knee is bent.

The leg bend and the saddle position in the second photo are much better.  The saddle has been raised so that the left knee is almost straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke. In the early days of mountain biking, pictures like these could help riders all over the world figure out how to set up their bikes for optimal performance.
