Trail Testing – Giant Anthem Advanced 27.5 0

Cross-country race bikes are coming in all shapes and sizes these days, from various wheel-sizes to suspension platforms. Its no secret that Giant went all-in with 27.5 wheels a couple seasons ago, and has been more than satisfied with their Maestro suspension. The Anthem Advanced 27.5 0 takes everything Giant is proud of and rolls into a ridiculously light XC race bike.

The Anthem uses Giant’s OverDrive2 technology, that makes the head-tube stouter and thus stronger and stiffer.

The front triangle uses Giant’s Advanced grade carbon, mixed with a full aluminum rear triangle. Giant has used carbon rear triangles in the past but claims the aluminum is stronger and stiffer than previous generations. We aren’t strangers to the Maestro suspension, as we have tested it on a few different bikes in the last year including the Reign Advanced and all new Glory Advanced. The platform is plush and offers plenty of adjustability to riders.

The Anthem looks amazing clean, but even better dirty.

While we don’t have too many opinions just yet, we are quite impressed with the build kit and overall presentation of the Anthem. The matching graphics on the suspension, drivetrain, and wheels look stunning in person, along with the paint scheme of the frame and rear triangle. Our test bike has a complete SRAM XX1 drivetrain, SRAM XX brakes, SRAM RS-1 100mm fork with a Monarch RL Shock, SRAM Rise 60 wheels, and complete carbon cockpit. Price is steep for some at $9,500. Giant does have the Anthem Advanced 1 with a full Shimano XT drivetrain for $4,800.

Some nice touches are the new Giant Contact carbon saddle, and KMC X11SL DLC chain (this may be a small touch, but makes it clear Giant spared no expense in putting this machine together).

So far we have noticed just how lightweight this bike is and it comes into play in the handling on the trail. We have been riding plenty of our local cross-country trails, but are curious to see what else this bike may have in store for us on more technical trails.
