CALIFORNIA STATE DOWNHILL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Photos by Terry Martin
(A 60-year-old former Cal State Champ who also won the single speed class en route to turning the second fastest two lap time–Even after helping Competitive Edge’s Umaro Jimenez fix a flat. Then after 14 miles over steep, jagged terrain in 100 degree-plus heat, Terry had the energy to put away all of his race paraphernalia, organize his camera equipment, and shoot the experts as they rounded the third lap. We should all be so fortunate…)

It’s not getting hot in here: Dave Marietti of Hot Shoppe Designs did these cool Cal State Downhill Champion Jerseys. The jerseys list long time Southridge sponsors odi, Kenda and Mr. Dirt.

Jackson family: Debbie, Don, Amber, Brittany and the odi-Southridge caravan make Fontana the only home for SoCal’s best downhillers. Behind Brittany is a photo Tanner Nickolus; Amber and husband Nick Hernandez’s newborn.

Long time overdue: Dual U.S. and British citizen Waylon Smith left Southridge as the best downhiller in California. The still fresh KHS team rider has been a Fontana regular since the very beginning.

Best helmet: KHS teammate David Klaassen Van Oorschot had the fastest first run time. Fame originally came too quick and easy for David. In 2006 he’s back on the program and ready to fulfill promise.

Fontana Junk yard: Who else but Bobby Bondurant (of driving school fame) would hang a toy car on his handlebar? This rock pit was the deciding factor in the downhill. As you can tell, the left side wasn’t a good line…

And neither was the right side, which happened to be the hot line last year. Both riders recovered unscathed. Southridge’s challenging landscape is littered with hairy rock garden “junk yards” like this…

The fastest line was wide open down the middle and leaping clear over the rocks at the bottom. Zach Olson, a member of Eric Carter’s grassroots Mongoose team, scored a 4:10.45 and placed 5th Expert 18-.

Future is bright: The shortened wall sprint finish was a welcomed relief in the 110 degree heat. Fastest Sport Jereme Mena blasted the 19-26 class with a great 4:04.67. It would have earned him 8th in the Pro class.

Thinking Saddleback: MBA’s Eddie Arnet captured a big win aboard our Titus Racer-X. Eddie shows some great motocross form: head over the fork line to stick the front tire, weighted outside pedal, elbows up and looking ahead.

Hot: AFP-Velo Sport rider Bob Kmetz is a do-good 45-54 sport who is now making waves in the expert class. Bob is bringing it home with empty water bottles and the full air conditioned look. It was 116 degrees in the back valley.
