Moab, Utah
Here is a picture of the Slickrock MTB trail in Moab, Utah. We spent a week out there hiking/jeeping/UTVing and mountain biking. I think we would have been happy on our bikes for the entire week. My friend Paul Dunham is much more skilled and experienced than I am, but I agreed to try out Slickrock. I walked most of it, but he tore it up. I felt bad that I was holding him back, so I sent him off on his own after we were done. He finished in a quarter of the time he did when I was with him. I think he might be planning on returning without me, next time.

Inside Scoop
Every serious Mountain Biker from around the world knows or has heard about the famous and notorious Slickrock Trail in Moab. It was this trail that put Moab on the map, and turned Moab into a mountain biking mecca that brings 1000’s of mountain bikers from around the globe to Moab. The Slickrock Trail is VERY well marked with painted white lines like the middle of a highway, and there are yellow caution markers and black diamonds to warn you of deadly sections ahead. Be sure to watch for these warnings after you hit the main loop at mile 2.5. Hills on the trail are short, but grueling and very steep. If you let your momentum carry you it could get you into trouble on twisty sections with off-camber turns, but mostly it is the momentum that will allow you to ride up the really steep stuff. Traction is fantastic, except when wet or icy. Watch out for winter! Trail Surface: slickrock, obviously, with a painted white line guiding you into the most outrageous situations. At times it is like riding on the outside edge of a 300-foot high basketball. There is a fee of $5/vehicle or $2/bike to enter Sand Flats Recreation Area. Please leave your dogs home as their paws have a hard time on the rock. The trail is also open to motorcycles and sees a lot of traffic.
The Trek There
The Slickrock Trail begins on the Sand Flats Road, reached by turning left off Moab’s main drag onto 300 South, then right when the road ends, then second left. From the entry gate (where you pay your fee), drive about 0.6 miles. You’ll see a large parking lot on the left, with bathrooms (but no water.)
