Throwback Thursday: Mountain Bike Action, June 1990

Throwback Thursday

June 1990

Our June 1990 issue of MBA featured stories about America’s best cycling vacation resorts, the benefits of steel mountain bikes, and the disc wheel revolution. John Tomac had recently won the title of the world’s fastest downhiller on the Mammoth Kamikaze riding on Tioga’s aerodynamic disc wheels. Our readers who are motocross fans will probably know that John’s son Eli has been the top rider in the 450 Supercross standings for 2020. We said in our article that John raced motocross bikes as much as he could during the winter in 1990.

Disc wheels were popular for a while in those days, but they eventually fell out of favor. It seems likely that the biggest problem was that a strong gust of wind could cause too many problems, especially if the rider was in the air.
