FXR Men’s Ride Pack Jacket Review – Performance and Features Tested
An excellent just-in-case jacket to throw in your ride pack for when you face unexpected changes in the elements
FXR Men’s Ride Pack Jacket Review
Tech features:
FXR has designed its Men’s Ride Pack jacket to be an excellent just-in-case jacket to throw in your ride pack for when you face unexpected changes in the elements. The whole jacket fits conveniently into one of the side zippered pockets, so it’s about the size of a small brick. Its flexible-spandex four-way stretch shell has a DWR (durable water-repellent) finish to protect from water.
The removable hood isn’t large enough to cover a helmet, but it will cover your face enough to protect you from the elements. It has vents in the back underlaid with mesh to keep the air flowing. The jacket has two zippered side pockets (one of which is the storage bag), a shock cord to adjust the hem, and reflective screen-printed logos.
Field test results:
This is an excellent just-in-case jacket that can be stowed away in the depths of your riding pack, quite literally, “for a rainy day.” Though it’s not classified as a rain jacket, it helped us remain dry on several occasions when it was needed to finish a ride dry after a freak rainstorm struck.
The zipper pockets were easy to operate when needed, and though it’s not the warmest jacket, it provided plenty of shelter from the elements to keep our body temperature level. We’d equate the warmth given by this jacket as equivalent to your average hoodie, but it has some added protection against wind and rain, which means it was only good until about 45 degrees before it couldn’t keep up.
It has a puffy, loose feel when wearing it that doesn’t make it particularly aerodynamic, which means it tends to make a bit of noise when riding speeds increase. The removable hood was nice in these situations to cut down on the noise and wind resistance.
Though it’s not great in the wind, it is made of a stretchy fabric that moves well with the body while riding and keeps it from forming pressure spots from reaching to grab the handlebars or when cornering. It was very comfortable to ride in. Of the many things we like about this jacket, we especially liked the fact that it could be folded into its own pocket with relative ease. This function made it easy to pack or unpack it from our bag when we were done with it or in need of its assistance. It has become a permanent resident of our adventure packs on long rides.
