Improved durability, reduced friction, and more engagement

Industry Nine Launch Redesigned Hydra2 Hubs

After years of feedback from their original Hydra hubs, Industry Nine has launched the Hydra2 hubs, which is claimed to be their “most refined system yet.” They are still manufactured locally in Asheville, North Carolina, but key updates to the hub’s construction make them more durable and better performing than its predecessor while providing more engagement than ever.

One of the key updates to the Hydra2 hubs is the use of improved and optimized full-contact radial lip seals with proximity dust shields to reduce friction and rolling resistance in the system while being more effective at keeping the elements out. They also use durable 6903 bearings on both the drive and non-drive sides of the hub to promote long-lasting performance and minimal maintenance.

Another major update comes to the pawl and drive ring design. Now, with 0.41 degrees of engagement, the Hydra2 hub offers an incredible 890 points of engagement, claiming it provides 60% less coasting drag than the previous hubs. There are also larger 5.5mm pawl pockets to help distribute drive forces more evenly and increase durability, and each pawl now has three teeth each, allowing them to handle more torque from full-power eMTB motors. The drive ring itself is also made from an updated and more fatigue-resistant steel, further increasing the durability of the system.

Finally, the axle system of the hub has seen a major redesign to address complaints associated with the previous platform. The new axle design is 65% thicker than the original Hydra, making it much stronger and more durable over time, and an improved stress washer design is much more effective at distributing loads and extending the life of the system.
