MANITOU MATTOC PRO

Highly adjustable and ready to rip

M6Manitou

Manitou’s investment in suspension spans 20 years, and during those two decades the company has worked tirelessly to provide the best products possible to their customers. Manitou’s updated fork, named after many trail builders’ favorite tool, the Mattoc, is a revamped fork designed to go head to head with other popular trail forks. Manitou’s current com- petition is fierce, but as we headed out to test the Mattoc Pro, we suspected it had a few tricks up its sleeve.

Tech features:

The Manitou Mattoc Pro has 34-millimeter stanchions and is compatible with 27.5- and 26-inch wheels. The fork utilizes 140, 150 or 160 millimeters of travel and can be bumped up to 170 millimeters when used with a 26-inch wheel. The Mattoc has an MC2 (multi-control compression) damper featuring high- and low-speed compression adjusters, along with an external HBO (Hydraulic Bottom Out) adjuster. The fork also has a regular rebound adjuster and a patented Hex-lock thru-axle, providing excellent stiffness. The Mattoc comes in three colors: matte red, matte black and gloss white. The fork has a 1.5-inch tapered steer tube and shares air-spring technology with its burly downhill brother, the Dorado. With a weight of 1877 grams with the steerer tube cut to fit our Fezzari Nebo Peak test bike and a price of $850, this fork is ready to tear up the mountains near you.

Field test results:

Installing our Mattoc Pro was similar to any other fork installation, requiring us to cut the steerer tube to our desired length and set the crown race and star nut. The cable routing of the front brake runs in between the fork legs and did rub a little bit of the paint off from the inner part of the crown after some time out on the trails. Riders should protect their forks with a piece of tape or by shortening the brake hose to prevent rubbing. Setting sag and rebound was easy, but the other adjustments took some time to fine-tune. Riders who relish dialing in their suspension will absolutely love the adjustability of the Mattoc. One of our favorite features was the HBO adjustment. This knob allowed us to take drops and jumps with the confidence that our fork wasn’t going to feel too harsh at the end of its travel. After spending a good amount of time dialing in our Mattoc, we were blown away by its performance. Not only did the Mattoc provide a plush feel on descents, it also was very efficient on the climbs. The Mattoc is priced lower than its competitors and still comes in at a competitive weight for an all-mountain/trail fork. Riders who truly enjoy playing with their equipment will love playing with the Mattoc Pro.
