PNW LOAM XL GRIP REVIEW

Tech features:

PNW’s original Loam grip (reviewed here) has an average diameter of 30mm, but they have expanded the line with a new Loam Grip XL with a larger 34mm diameter. These mountain bike grips feature water-shedding fins strategically designed to absorb vibrations and facilitate water dispersion during wet rides. They incorporate PNW’s Happy Camper compound that is designed to strike a balance between softness for vibration absorption and firmness to maintain shape and durability.

Additionally, the grips have a pattern running horizontally across their surface to enhance traction, while a thicker mountain pattern provides support to the palm of the hand, contributing to a comfortable and a secure grip.

These grips are offered in 11 colors: Safety Orange, Black Out Black, Sea-Foam Teal, Cement Grey, Really Red, Fruit Snacks Purple, Moto Green, Desert Dune, Pacific Blue, Peanut Butter and Moss Green.

Field test results:

When we last reviewed PNW’s original-size grip, test riders thought they lacked all-day comfort and support. Well, we now get that with the new larger 34mm size. They deliver more cushion and vibration damping without feeling too oversized for most larger-handed riders. The ribbed pattern offers excellent traction wet or dry, gloved or bare-handed. These grips have a slightly tapered shape to them seemingly matching that of your hand.

Test riders not only thought that the Loam XL’s design looked cool, but they also liked all of the color choices and the fact that you can match them to PNW’s Loam dropper-lever pad colors, too. The only real downside to these otherwise awesome grips is that the ribbed design tends to pick up gravel and small debris when you crash or lay the bike down in softer soil. Our solution? Don’t crash.
