FOX LAUNCH PRO D30 KNEE PAD REVIEW – CONVERTIBLE HARD-SHELL PROTECTION

Knee protection for going big

FOX LAUNCH PRO D30 KNEE PAD REVIEW

Tech features:

A removable hard plastic knee cup and inner D30 pad layer make the Launch Pro D30 a somewhat burly pad that can be converted for lighter-duty use. Heavy-duty Velcro retains the semi-hard plastic shell. Perforated Ariaprene material is utilized throughout most of the pad, offering even more protection along with airflow. Lightweight, stretchy mesh is placed at the back of the knee for comfort. Velcro straps at the top and bottom of the pad, along with a silicone gripper help keep them in place. Fox says the D30 insert is CE certified.

Field test results:

We got off to a rocky start with the Launch Pro D30s. Minutes into our first ride we were looking for bushes to stash them in because they were so uncomfortable. They were rubbing on the top of the knee cap and chafing at the back of the knee. After an hour or so of pedaling the pads seemed to break in and conform to our knees. All of the discomfort disappeared, and even with the hard plastic cap, comfort was superb. In fact, it’s so comfortable there’s really no reason not to use the plastic cap. Not only does it tend to slide instead of grab, it spreads out impact load and prevents sharp rock penetrations. Another plus to the removable plastic shell is that it can be replaced if damaged, protecting your investment and keeping them looking good. Replacements cost just $18.

Fit is on the looser side for a size medium, requiring the Velcro straps to be cinched down. Then, stability is excellent and they stay put. The top cuff is on the short side, so inseam length is critical in avoiding the short/pad gap. Even though the pads are made with breathable material, these are on the warmer end of the pedal-able pad spectrum. They are not our first choice for pedal-heavy rides in hot weather. However, they are perfect for enduro-style riding where high levels of protection in a pedal-friendly package are required—just let them break in a bit first.
