RAPHA TRAIL KNEE PAD REVIEW – LIGHTWEIGHT PEDAL FRIENDLY PROTECTION

Tech features: Rapha’s first foray into the world of knee protection comes in the form of a lightweight, pedal-friendly design. Rapha claims that they offer the highest level of protection in a lightweight kneepad currently on the market. The pad’s insert features Rheon Labs active polymer technology that strengthens when subjected to force. It is constructed in a grid-like pattern with lots of holes for ventilation and raised square shapes for enhanced impact absorption. The insert is housed in an outer sleeve that’s primarily lightweight Lycra material except for the front panel, which is made of a ceramic polymer material that is designed to reduce friction and adds tear resistance. Elastic bands at the top and bottom of the sleeve combined with silicone gripper ridges are designed to keep the pads in place.

 

 

Field test results:

From the first moment we slid these pads on we were impressed by the fit and comfort they provide. They are snug yet free of pressure points or bunching. We never had a rag-doll-type crash in them (thankfully), but protection is more than adequate for lower speed off trail excursions. The inserts are removable via an overlapping flap, so the outer sleeve is washable and easy to keep fresh. The pads stayed in place, but for some riders the upper cuff would slide down occasionally early in a ride before any sweat had built up sticking things in place. It seems as though the vertically oriented grippers would be more effective if they were horizontal and perpendicular to the leg and sliding forces. Ventilation is good, but they are not as airy feeling as some when the going gets hot. Although style is highly subjective, most riders liked the stealthy, low-profile look of Rapha’s Trail knee pads that blend in well with most outfits.
